How Much Does It Cost to Ship a Pet from Canada to Taiwan?

Taiwan is one of the few routes where the largest single cost is decided months before you book a flight. Every dog and cat arriving from Canada faces a seven day quarantine at a designated facility, unless the import permit application reaches the authorities at least 120 days ahead with a rabies antibody result that already meets the rules. Apply on the shorter twenty day route and the seven days stand. Everything else about the route is the same either way, so the gap between an early plan and a late one is a week of kennel fees and a week of your pet being somewhere you are not.

The order matters more here than any individual fee. The microchip goes in first. The rabies vaccination is given after the microchip and after the animal is 90 days old, and it must be in date on the day of travel, given between one year and 30 days before entry. The blood sample for the rabies neutralising antibody test is drawn after that, at a laboratory Taiwan recognises, and must return at least 0.5 IU per millilitre.

From there the two routes split. To have the quarantine waived, the permit application and the laboratory report go in at least 120 days before arrival, with the blood sample drawn between 180 days and one year before entry. The standard route is an application at least 20 days ahead, with the sample drawn between 90 days and one year before entry, and a seven day stay at a designated facility on arrival. Facility fees are set by the facility rather than published centrally, and the facility contacts you once the booking is confirmed.

Three breeds cannot be imported at all: the American Pit Bull Terrier, the American Pit Bull and the American Staffordshire Terrier. Bengal and leopard cat hybrids are accepted from the fifth generation onward, and earlier generations need an approval that in practice is limited to research institutions.

How flight pricing works on this route

There is no published rate card for a pet flying from Canada to Taipei. Live animal freight is quoted per booking, and the number comes back once the airline knows the crate outside dimensions, the loaded weight and the date. Air Canada Cargo, EVA Air and China Airlines all serve the route from Vancouver, and Toronto departures usually connect, so on most dates there is more than one carrier to compare. A direct flight costs more than a connection, and on a route this long the difference is often worth paying, because every transfer is another handling stop where a crate waits on a ramp.

Season matters as much as carrier. Summer heat embargoes at Taipei and at connecting hubs can close a booking window entirely, and airlines apply them on forecast temperature rather than by date, so a flight that was available on Monday can be refused on Thursday.

What is not included here

Your veterinarian sets their own fees. The examination, the certificate paperwork and the blood draw are priced by your clinic and vary widely between cities. Ground transport in Taiwan, from the airport to the quarantine facility and from the facility to your address, is charged separately, as is any boarding in Canada if your flight date and your own moving date do not line up.

What moves the price

Crate size drives the flight cost, as on every route, because freight is charged on the volume the crate occupies rather than on what your pet weighs. After that, the biggest variable on this route is whether the quarantine is waived, which is a question of when you start rather than what you spend. Departure city counts as well. A pet leaving Vancouver has direct options that a pet leaving Halifax does not, and the extra domestic leg shows up in both the price and the number of handling points.
