How Much Does It Cost to Ship a Pet from Canada to Brazil?

Brazil asks for less than almost any other destination on this list. No import permit. No microchip. No rabies blood test. No quarantine step anywhere in the published procedure. The certificate is valid for 60 days rather than the ten you get for Europe, so the paperwork does not have to be squeezed into the week before the flight. What Brazil does insist on is that three shorter clocks all line up inside that certificate, and those are the only thing on this route that can send you back to the vet.

That leaves the CFIA endorsement as the entire government cost of a move to Brazil, and it is charged per certificate rather than per animal, so two pets on one certificate cost the same as one. Everything else on the list is your veterinarian and the airline.

The three clocks on the certificate

Work backwards from the date your veterinarian signs the certificate, because every deadline is measured against it rather than against the flight.

The clinical examination must have happened within 10 days before the certificate is issued. The broad spectrum treatment for internal and external parasites must have been given within 15 days before it is issued. And if the rabies vaccination is your pet’s first one, the trip itself cannot happen until 21 days after the shot. The certificate is then good for 60 days from issue, as long as the rabies vaccination is still in date on the day you travel.

Age changes the picture at the start. A puppy or kitten of 90 days or older needs the rabies vaccination. One under 90 days can travel without it, where the veterinary authority certifies the animal was under 90 days old when the certificate was issued and that there was no exposure to urban rabies in the preceding 90 days.

How flight pricing works on this route

Live animal freight from Canada to Brazil is quoted per booking rather than taken from a rate card. The airline prices it once it knows the crate outside dimensions, the loaded weight and the date. Air Canada flies Toronto to Sao Paulo, and most other Canadian departures connect through Toronto or through a US hub, which adds a handling stop and, if the connection is American, a transit clearance to plan around.

Sao Paulo and Rio are the practical arrival points for animals. Heat embargoes are set on forecast temperature at each airport on the routing, and because the seasons are reversed, a Canadian winter departure lands in a Brazilian summer, which is the combination most likely to close a booking window.

What is not included here

Your veterinarian sets their own fees. The examination, the vaccination, the parasite treatments and the certificate paperwork are priced by your clinic and vary widely between cities. Customs handling in Brazil and ground transport from the airport to your address are charged separately, as is any boarding in Canada if your flight date and your own moving date do not line up.

What moves the price

Crate size drives the flight cost, as on every route, because freight is charged on the space the crate occupies rather than on what your pet weighs. With the government side of this move down to a single endorsement, the flight is almost the whole number, and the flight is set by the crate, the departure city and the season. A second pet is unusually cheap here, because one certificate covers both.
